Chicago ZIP Directory Coverage
The current City of Chicago ZIP polygon dataset returned 60 distinct values when inspected. That figure describes shapes in a city map layer, not every postal alias, box range, or resident. The Chicago ZIP code directory groups those values by practical area. Always check one full address before assigning a postal code or jurisdiction.
| ZIP Code | Areas Covered | Post Office | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60601–60604 | Loop and east Loop | Chicago, IL | Check the specific building |
| 60605–60608 | South Loop, West Loop, Near West Side, Pilsen | Chicago, IL | Community lines overlap |
| 60609–60612 | New City, Near North Side, Streeterville, near west areas | Chicago, IL | Several community areas |
| 60613–60618 | Lake View, Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, Chinatown, South Chicago, North Center | Chicago, IL | Verify the exact code |
| 60619–60625 | Chatham, Auburn Gresham, Englewood, West Town, Little Village, Garfield Park, Lincoln Square | Chicago, IL | Many multi-area ZIPs |
| 60626–60634 | Rogers Park, south and southwest edges, northwest Chicago | Chicago, IL | Alias and edge cases |
| 60636–60647 | Englewood, Woodlawn, Clearing, Uptown, Portage Park, Beverly, Austin, Forest Glen, Logan Square | Chicago, IL | Some shared USPS labels |
| 60649–60661 | South Shore, Humboldt Park, Ashburn, Bronzeville, River North, O'Hare edges, Lake View, Edgewater, West Loop | Chicago, IL | Address check required |
| 60666 | O'Hare Airport | Chicago, IL | Unique airport ZIP, not a normal household area |
| 60707 | Galewood and Chicago mailing edge | Chicago, IL | Includes places outside city limits |
| 60827 | Riverdale and southern mailing edge | Chicago, IL | Municipal and postal lines differ |
The table uses the USPS city label because the research did not verify a station for every row. Exact delivery status belongs to USPS. Parcel municipality belongs to Cook or City GIS. This matters most for the airport and edge values.

Chicago ZIPs Cross Communities
Chicago has 77 official community areas, while the city ZIP query produced 60 values. The sets do different jobs. Community areas are stable statistical geographies. ZIPs support mail routing. Compare the City's community-area data with its ZIP overlay map, while remembering that the older overlay is not a current USPS boundary file.
ZIP 60616 reaches Armour Square, Chinatown, Douglas, and Bridgeport. ZIP 60618 crosses North Center, Avondale, Irving Park, and Albany Park. Hyde Park connects with more than one postal area. A neighborhood can narrow a map check, but it cannot replace the code assigned to the exact address.
Note: A community area, neighborhood, ward, postal city, and parcel municipality are separate Chicago record fields.
Chicago's Three Edge ZIPs
Three values need special care. ZIP 60666 serves the O'Hare Airport context and is not a normal neighborhood household zone. ZIP 60707 carries Chicago mailing context around Galewood but includes territory outside the city. ZIP 60827 covers Riverdale and the southern mailing edge, also crossing the practical municipal line.
A Chicago postal label does not prove a parcel is inside Chicago. Use CookViewer to check parcel municipality, then use City layers for city geography. USPS should settle the delivery label. This three-source check prevents a ZIP match from becoming a false claim about jurisdiction.
Boundary check. For 60666, 60707, or 60827, confirm the full address before treating the result as a Chicago household.
Find Chicago Residents by ZIP
A ZIP can narrow a lawful search when a name and approximate area are known. It cannot make a complete list of Chicago residents. The voter tool uses ZIP as one required identity field. Property and GIS systems use it as address or map context. The recorder has no dedicated ZIP field.
- Confirm the five-digit code for the full address through USPS or the City geocoder.
- Open the city ZIP and community-area layers to understand the surrounding geography.
- Use name, birth date, ZIP, and street details in the Illinois voter tool when appropriate.
- Use Cook property information or CookViewer to connect the address to a parcel and municipality.
- Once the search reaches a street or PIN, continue with the Chicago street directory workflow.
A voter match confirms a supplied combination, not a ZIP-wide roll. A polygon maps places, not people. A tax mailing address can differ from the property address. Keep the date and source attached to every result.
Chicago ZIP Search Tools
Chicago portals use postal codes in different ways. This field table distinguishes useful ZIP inputs from tools that require another search key.
| Tool | ZIP use | Result and limit |
|---|---|---|
| Illinois voter lookup | Required five digits | Narrows streets for one supplied identity, not a ZIP list |
| Cook property information | Optional with address | Property and tax result, not a resident roster |
| Cook Assessor simple search | No ZIP field observed | Uses address, city, or PIN |
| CookViewer | Boundary layer | Map, filter, context, and reports |
| Chicago geocoder | Returned geography | Geographies for one address or intersection |
| USPS lookup | Address-to-ZIP route | Delivery code and postal city |
| Cook Recorder | No dedicated ZIP field | Uses name, PIN, address, document, or legal description |
The Chicago geocoder requires an address or intersection and can return selected geography. It can tie a postal result to wards, precincts, and community areas. CookViewer supplies the parcel side.
Chicago ZIP Aliases Explained
The USPS DMM L012 list groups carrier labels and aliases. It does not draw exact parcel boundaries. Examples include 60606 with 60661, 60622 with 60642, 60624 with 60644, 60615 with 60653, and 60643 with 60827. An alias can explain an unexpected postal label, but it cannot decide which city government serves the address.
For mail, follow USPS delivery data. For taxes, permits, wards, or public records, follow the agency's parcel or jurisdiction field. This distinction keeps a Chicago ZIP code directory from blurring postal routing with legal geography.
Chicago Addresses Behind ZIP Codes
Chicago's grid begins from State and Madison. The Chicago Public Library's street-number history describes 100 numbers per one-eighth mile block, even numbers on west and north sides, and odd numbers on east and south sides. Major changes took effect in 1911. The grid helps locate a block, but it does not assign the ZIP code.
Historic searches also face renamed streets and annexation. A modern address may not match an old permit or directory, and a pre-annexation file may sit under a former municipality. Translate the name and number first. Then consult the period map or directory. Use the modern postal code only as present-day context.
Note: Never copy a modern ZIP backward into a record that predates the postal code system.
Chicago ZIP Address Vocabulary
Postal, parcel, and recording systems describe one place with different labels. Knowing the terms prevents unrelated Chicago records from being joined.
- ZIP+4
- A five-digit ZIP plus four digits for a delivery segment. It is not a parcel ID.
- PO-box ZIP
- A code or range used for post-office-box delivery rather than a normal street area.
- Unique ZIP
- A code assigned to a high-volume institution, such as the O'Hare context of 60666.
- Carrier route
- A USPS delivery sequence that does not follow community or ward lines.
- Situs address
- The physical parcel location. The tax mailing address may differ.
- PIN
- Cook County's 14-digit parcel identifier, not a postal address.
A deed can use a legal description with subdivision, block, lot, section, township, and range. USPS uses a delivery address. The City geocoder uses mapped geography. Keep each label with its source.
What Chicago ZIP Results Prove
A source proves only what it was built to show. USPS validates postal routing. The City polygon places an address within a mapped shape. CookViewer associates it with a parcel and municipal context. The voter tool confirms a supplied identity and address combination when it returns a match.
| Claim | Best source | Still check |
|---|---|---|
| Mailing ZIP | USPS | Municipal line and parcel |
| Mapped ZIP | Chicago data portal | Current delivery code |
| Chicago jurisdiction | City and Cook GIS | Agency district |
| Resident association | Name-and-address record | Date, identity, second source |
No polygon identifies every resident. A shared code cannot prove that two people live in the same neighborhood or city. Use a ZIP to narrow the search, then verify the person through the proper custodian.
Chicago ZIPs Versus City Limits
A Chicago mailing label can describe postal service without proving an address falls within the city. This is clearest at 60707 and 60827, and it also matters around O'Hare. A records request should go to the government that keeps the record, so check parcel municipality before contacting a city or county office.
The Chicago ZIP code directory ends with a clear source order: USPS for delivery, City GIS for mapped city geography, Cook GIS for parcel context, and the custodian for a person or property fact. When results conflict, save the date and wording of each result instead of choosing the easiest label.
- Postal city
- The city name USPS uses for delivery. It may not match the municipal boundary.
- Municipal city
- The incorporated government whose limits contain the parcel.
- Community area
- One of Chicago's 77 official statistical areas, not a ZIP.
- Parcel municipality
- The local jurisdiction recorded for a Cook County parcel.
